Background
Starting in 1992, many regional aeromagnetic surveys have been acquired over selected areas in Greenland. The primary objective has been and still is to stimulate mining exploration activity in Greenland. A secondary objective is to provide modern geophysical data of high quality that will have a lasting value in the understanding of the geology of Greenland. Such data are prerequisite for successful mineral exploration. This new project in South East Greenland in 2012 and 2013 confirms the stated commitment of the Greenland Government to encourage mining exploration activities. Throughout these projects, GEUS has been the operator handling project management, quality control, compilation, and the maintenance of the data for future use in both the public and the private domain. Thus, the acquired data will become part of the national geoscientific database for Greenland, and will become available for purchase to e.g. the exploration industry.
The first surveys in 1992 2001 covered South Greenland, Southwest Greenland, the Disko Bugt, region both onshore and offshore, central West Greenland, and the region around Uummannaq on the West Coast. In 2011 and 2012, the plan is to cover selected parts of the South East Greenland region, as an integral component of a mineral resource assessment programme of that region, taking place from 2009 to 2015.
The project is part of a major effort to improve the knowledge of South East Greenland through a mineral resource assessment program (MRAPSEG); geochemical surveys were carried out in 2009 and 2010, together with geological reconnaissance surveying. In 2011, a major programme of geological fieldwork was carried out in the southern target area and will be followed by further fieldwork in the same area in 2012. The aeromagnetic survey will start in 2012. The subsequent aeromagnetic survey in 2013 will focus on the region around Tasilaq further to the north, where geological fieldwork is expected to take place in 2013 and maybe 2014. As in previous airborne geophysical surveys in Greenland, the data will be released to the public the following year, probably around March; i.e. the data from the 2012 survey will be ready for public presentation by March 2013.
