Part 1: New insight into the life, work and aspirations of Greenland geo-explorer Lauge Koch (1892-1964).

Lauge Koch var involveret i Grønland i 50 år og hans indsats fik en stor indflydelse på Arktisk Geoscience.
Hans personlige papirer blev deponeret i Rigsarkivet i 1960'erne, men en samling af materiale forblev i familiens varetægt. Denne samling er nu blevet frigivet af familien, og bliver for første gang beskrevet i denne bog.

Materialet falder i fem kategorier: (1) Diverse papirer (breve, kort, tegninger, manuskripter, ekspeditionsplaner og udforsknings- og boreplaner), (2) Notesbøger fra felten (dagbøger, logbøger og kalendere), (3) fotografisk materiale (papirkopier, negativer, dias og film), (4) Lydoptagelser (kassetter og spoler) og (5) Udklip fra aviser og blade.

Tidsmæssigt dækker samlingen hele Kochs voksenliv, fra hans første besøg i Grønland i 1913 til hans sidste i 1959, samt hans senere år, herunder den sidste nordamerikanske foredragsturné i 1964.

Bogen giver en oversigt over samlingen og placerer nogle af dokumenterne i deres historiske kontekst. Den kaster nyt lys på mange begivenheder i Kochs liv og fortæller en helt ny historie om Knud Rasmussens skæbnesvangre 2. Thule ekspedition fra 1916-18, som Koch deltog i som studerende.

Forfatteren Peter R. Dawes, som er emeritus forsker ved GEUS, har arbejdet med Grønlands geologi i mere end 50 år. Dawes' brændende interesse for udforskningshistorien i Arktis startede under hans deltagelse i flere ekspeditioner til Nordgrønland i 1960erne. Her blev han introduceret til Lauge Kochs arbejde, og siden har Dawes, i beundring for Kochs store indsats, beskæftiget sig med hans virke, blandt andet gennem kontakt med Koch familien.
