  • This project funded by the Danish Agency for Science, Technology and Innovation (FNU) is carried out in collaboration with the Department of Earth Sciences, University of Aarhus. Aim of the project is to carry out a multi-proxy study of marine sediment cores from along the Atlantic Warm Water Route in order to reveal the significance of tropical-polar ocean and climate linkage and the role of inter-hemispheric water mass exchange in Atlantic climate variability. It is our goal to test the significance of this water mass exchange on the strength of the North Atlantic thermohaline circulation, which is a controlling mechanism not only for European, but also global climate. Most climate studies focus on a particular area or region, e.g. Europe or Greenland. However, if we truly wish to understand the climate system, it is necessary to include teleconnections reaching from the tropics to polar regions. With the sediment cores available, we will be able to resolve centennial to millennial scale climate variability for the last 40,000 years and, in addition, detect multi-decadal variability of the last 1-2000 years. This will enable us to test the hypothesis that European and Arctic climate is significantly controlled by climate processes in the tropics.
