The Nanostructure Laboratory is a research laboratory in the field of nanostructure basic science. The main object is investigations of the finest fractions of geological materials, such as clay minerals, and of the nanostructure of these materials. Particularly the detailed structure of the complex mixed-layer clay minerals and their transformation mechanisms in shale and in the North Sea chalk have been investigated. Recently, the nanostructures of silica minerals in chalk and their genesis have been the second main object of the Nanostructure Laboratory.
The Nanostructure Laboratory carries out pioneer basic science research in cooperation with universities and research institutes, mainly in Russia, Denmark, USA and UK. The knowledge is applied in research projects with external partners and especially in the oil industry but also in high-technology nanoresearch projects with the industry.
