Lake response to climate change during the last 1000 years

  • The project aims at elucidating lake-ecosystem response to climate change seen in their hydrological context. Since changes of climate often happen over a relatively long time period modern instrumental data can only provide a limited insight into ecosystem response to climate change. By using a variety of proxy analyses of sediment successions from two Danish lakes (Hampen Sø and Rævsø, Mid-Jutland) the 'monitoring' period will be extended to the last 1000 years. The hydrological, nutritional and biological response of the two lakes to two opposing climate regimes (the Medieval Warm Period, ca. 800-1300 AD, and the Little Ice Age, ca. 1600-1850 AD), will be studied in order to lay down possible effects of climate change on contemporary and future lake-ecosystems.
