  • Kaarina Weckström is a biologist with interest in palaeolimnology and –oceanography. Her expertise includes diatom taxonomy/ecology and sediment biomarkers. During her PhD and early postdoctoral career she studied the recent eutrophication history of the Baltic Sea by developing/applying quantitative diatom-based nutrient inference models to fossil diatom communities. More recently she has worked on Late-Pleniglacial climatic change in the Southern Alps using diatom-based temperature inference models. Currently she is working as a Marie Curie postdoctoral fellow on the variation of sea surface temperatures (SST) and the extent of Arctic sea ice in the Labrador Sea area during late Holocene using both diatom analysis and SST/sea ice -specific biomarkers (project CLIMICE). In addition, she is involved in a project assessing the limnological and hydrological changes of two Danish seepage lakes during the last 1000 years.
