Macroscopical remains of plants include seeds, fruits, leaves, wood, bark, bud scales and other multicellular plant organs. Plant macrofossils can often be identified at the species level and usually come from the local environment. Plant macrofossils can throw light on former environments such as climate, vegetation and limnology, and they are also important in biogeographical analyses. In addition, after the introduction of the AMS radiocarbon dating technique, remains of terrestrial plants are becoming increasingly used for dating.
