The Department of Hydrology works with characterization, modelling, and management of water and solute transport in the hydrological cycle, in Denmark and internationally. Climate, land use and water circulation all greatly influence the evolution of water quantity and quality in the hydrological cycle. Focus areas include interaction between land surface, root zone, groundwater bodies, watercourses, lakes, wetlands, and the sea. Present research, consulting and capacity building activities by the Department of Hydrology diverge into the following five main fields:
Hydrogeological characterization Borehole logging - Level-determined sampling of groundwater - Deliniation of saltwater and freshwater boundaries in aquifers - Groundwater/surface water interaction - Vulnerability of soils to pesticide leaching - Optimized and integrated monitoring and modelling of groundwater quantity and quality - Remote sensing for estimating spatially distributed hydrological variables at large scale - Fracture transport in till as well as limestone - Hydrological investigation of subsurface CO2 deposition and radioactive waste

Water (flow) and solute transport

Freshwater resource - Contamination and transport - Quality assurance and uncertainty assessments
Climate change adaption   Groundwater resources and stream runoff - Changes in groundwater abstraction for irrigation purposes - Flooding - Saltwater intrusion - Pesticide and nutrient leaching - Protection of catchment areas and well fields  - Water in the landscape
Water management  Implementation of the Water Framework Directive - Integrated water resources management - Adaptive water management - Groundwater protection and groundwater management
Capacity building
Internationally, institutional capacity development in research and management of water resources
