WELL DATA ARCHIVE

In 1926, the Danish Parliament passed a law requiring that information from all new water supply-related wells must be reported. In response to this law, a well data archive was founded in 1926 at the Geological Survey of Denmark (now the Geological Survey of Denmark and Greenland (GEUS)). A similar law concerning wells relating to exploitation of raw materials was implemented in 1977. Geological, hydrological, geotechnical and administrative data are stored in the archive.

The archive has been expanded to include information from not only groundwater monitoring and production wells, but also raw material, geotechnical and other wells. The well record archives contain about 290,000 wells. A well database (Jupiter) contains digital information from about 240,000 wells.

Water supply wells: 50%
Geotechnical wells:  29%
Raw material wells:   6%
Others:  15%

When a well is under construction or when it is reported to GEUS a Well File Number is attached to the well. This number is an unique identification of the well and is written on the well file report, the sample description, water analysis and testpumping form etc. All reports and maps concerning a well is stored in the Well Data Archive. 240,000 wells are registrated in the well database "Jupiter".

The Jupiter well database is constructed so that users can easily extract information which can be used for generating well logs, well construction diagrams, geological profiles, geological maps, groundwater level maps and as input to other software such as Geographic Information Systems (GIS).

Examples of map types which may be required:

  • Soil maps, also on CD-rom.
  • Well position map.
  • Geological basicdata maps.
  • Isopach maps.
  • Isopiezometric maps.
  • Map of ground water chemistry.
  • Map of drinking water chemistry.
  • Geological profiles.

The Jupiter well database is available in a PC version (PC Jupiter). Data from the Well Data Archive are free and available to download from the program http://jupiter.geus.dk/servlet/DownloadPCJupiter

A big part of the original archive has been skanned and can be seen at www.geus.dk/jupiter together with further information about the wells.
