The Department of Petrology and Economic Geology assists Greenland's Bureau of Minerals and Petroleum ( BMP) with a number of activities linked to the exploration and exploitation of mineral resources in Greenland, including BMP's issuing of licenses and monitoring of associated company activities. The department assists BMP with the international marketing of Greenland's raw materials.

Based on the experience and expertise gained through these activities, GEUS is also involved in several capacity building projects in developing countries.
