The laboratory determines a range of trace elements in inorganic samples (after digestion with hydrofluoric acid) in solution by ICP-MS technique. The standard procedure determines Sc, V, Cr, Co, Ni, Cu, Zn, Ga, Rb, Sr, Y, Zr, Nb, Cs, Ba, La, Ce, Pr, Nd, Sm, Eu, Gd, Tb, Dy, Ho, Er, Tm, Yb, Lu, Hf, Ta, Pb, Th and U.
The laboratory has equipment for preparation of borate discs for samples that are difficult to bring into solution by the normal dissolution procedure.
The laboratory has
facilities in area 6
for crushing rock samples.
Key Intstruments
Perkin-Elmer Elan 6100 DRC quadrupol ICP-MS instrument
Restrictions on admittance
The work is normally done by the laboratory staff as hydrofluoric acid is used and standardised procedures are strictly adhered to. Due to the limited laboratory space it is not practical that others use the facilities.
Prises
