Geo science maps convey geological or geophysical information of an area, and include both printed as well as digital maps. Such geosciences maps remain fundamental to basic scientific research projects and mineral exploration companies.

Geological maps
GEUS has a long-standing tradition for making geological maps of Greenland (from 1967 - present). Traditionally the maps were published as printed map sheets, today new maps are published as digital format. The published geological maps include scales 1:100,000, 1:250,000, 1:500,000, 1:1,000,000 and 1:2,500,000. The national coverage of geological maps of Greenland can be studied at http://www.geus.dk/program-areas/raw-materials-greenl-map/greenland/gr-map/kostart-uk.htm.

Digital maps
An example of a digital map is the seamless digital geological map of South West Greenland (64º-61º30´N) that was released by GEUS in 2011 as a web-based map service. The map covers the area between the Ameralik and Sermiligaarsuk fjords and represents a recompilation and reassessment of the existing map base in scale 1:100 000. The map contains information about specific geological topics arranged in "interactive layers", including information about:

  • Sample details (localities, rock types etc.)
  • Geochronology
  • Metamorphism
  • Structural geology
  • Geophysical data
  • Google Earth compatible (KMZ-format)

One Geology
GEUS is presently engaged in the global initiative OneGeology which aims at producing a single digital map for the entire Earth in scale 1:1 million (or better) and with one harmonised geological legend. GEUS will contribute with a complete geological map of Greenland in scale 1:500,000.

Geophysical maps
Since the early 1970'es the use of airborne geophysical surveys has been applied as a basic mineral exploration tool in Greenland. A link to high-resolution Airborne geophysical surveys in Greenland can be found at http://www.geus.dk/departments/economic-geol/ags/ags-intro-uk.htm (English) and at http://www.geus.dk/departments/economic-geol/ags/ags-intro-dk.htm (Danish).

Detailed information about these geophysical surveys is described in Geology&Ore Nr. 3 ( download PDF).
