Mineral resource potential of South Greenland |

Objective South Greenland has seen many geoscientific activities during the second half of the last century, and much of the available information was in traditional formats, such as papers, maps, field notes, etc. The demand for digital versions of geoscientific data, preferably with a GIS association, is ever increasing. Based on comments from potential users of Greenland geoscientific data it will probably be true that unless the data exist in easily accessible digital formats, valuable information may well escape notice of busy customers. Often there is only a limited time available for a first look at the potential for a given commodity within a new region. The developing trend is to depend on GIS compilations of the available data for the first overview on which initial decisions are based. The GEUS project 'South Greenland mineral resource evaluation' was carried out 1997 to 1999 with the aim of compiling as much as possible of geoscientific information about South Greenland in digital form, and make the data publicly available. In addition, a re-evaluation of the mineral potential of South Greenland has been made using integrated data sets. The project was carried out under GEUS' first Performance Contract with the Ministry of Environment and Energy, and resulted in the publication of two reports and one CD-ROM presented here in addition to articles for international journals.
