Digital data on CD-ROM

General information

The CD-ROM contains the hitherto most comprehensive, quality controlled, digital geo-data set from South Greenland released for general use.

The digital information represents extracts from the information system GimmeX (Geoscience information mangement for mineral exploration), developed and operated by the Department of Economic Geology, GEUS. This is a combination of databases, programs and work procedures, which are used in the Survey's research activities in Greenland.

System requirements

  • Intel-based PC
  • Pentium processor
  • Windows 98, Windows NT 4.0 or higher
  • Minimum 32 Mb RAM
  • An ArcView GIS software licence version 3.2 or higher

Some information is provided as PDF formats for use in Adobe Acrobat Reader program.

The grids representing geophysical and geochemical anomalies are only included as geo-referenced TIF formats to save space on the CD-ROM.

The full digital data sets behind the grid images can be obtained from GEUS at cost. Please contact GEUS for a price quote - click here for contact information.

Content of the CD-ROM

The geo-data are arranged into 16 different views contained in the ArcView project file;

Topographic Base Map

Base map for South Greenland. Layers of names, geographical grid, and selected geographical features are avaiable. Some features are scale-sensitive.

Digital Elevation Model

Approximate digital elevation model calculated from positional data from aeromagnetic survey aircraft. Included as an image in geo-referenced TIF format.

Mosaic of Landsat TM scenes

A composite, natural look satellite image based on seven Landsat TM scenes in compressed format (MrSid).

Geological map (scale 1:500 000)

A new, digital geological map. The map is based on the printed 1:500 000 geological map with modifications and legend reflecting the results of recent geological investigations.

Airborne magnetics

Total field and first vertical derivative magnetic anomaly maps based on different airborne surveys. Geo-referenced TIF format.

Airborne electromagnetics

Anomaly maps based on airborne electromagnetic surveys of selcted areas in the north-western part of the region. Geo-referenced TIF format.

Airborne radiometrics

Radiometric anomaly maps based on airborne surveys. Geo-referenced TIF format.

Gravity maps

Free-air and Boguer gravity anomaly maps based on data from a number of sources compiled in a database by Kort- og Matrikelstyrelsen (KMS).

Sample locations

Sample location for stream sediments (fine fraction), heavy mineral concentrates of stream sediments and rock samples.

Stream sediments

Gridded anomaly maps for 42 major and trace elements. Geo-referenced TIF format.

Heavy mineral concentrates of stream sediments

Positions and analytical results as tables and coloured dot plots for 16 trace elements.

Rock analyses

Positions, sample descriptions and chemical analyses of c. 3400 rock samples.

Mineral occurrences

Map of 107 mineral occurrence sites with hotlinks to descriptions in PDF format.

Mineral exploration licenses 1992 - 2000

Maps of position and ownership of mineral exploration licenses for each of the years 1992 - 2000.

List of existing maps from South Greenland

Coverage and a few basic data on published topographic and geological maps from the region, and on unpublished field maps from GEUS' archive.

Bibliography including company reports

Geo-referenced bibliography of more than 2000 titles and a list of 204 released mineral exploration company reports.

Ivittuut cryolite mine in 1898.

The mining of cryolite at Ivittuut was terminated in 1987 after 133 years of operations. The open pit is now filled with water.
