The division is primarily engaged in solving geological tasks within the program areas: energy resources, nature and environment. Activities includes participation in research projects (both national and international), mapping and exploring the use of state agencies and contract assignments especially for oil companies. The department's professional staff includes in most projects which is multi-disciplinary in approach. A number of advanced modeling and mapping tools used in connection with exploration tasks (eg. Basin modeling), mapping of oil-gas fields, etc.

Geographically, the department is mainly engaged in activities in Denmark and Greenland. Furthermore, the department participates in international projects.

The department is responsible also for the operation of GEUS' Subsurface archive. The Subsurface archive's main objective is the handling of data from oil and gas related exploration activities in Denmark as well as in Greenland.

Research and consulting services in support of continued exploration and exploitation of Denmark's oil and gas resources.
Research and consulting services to create incentives for further investments in oil exploration in Greenland.
Earthquake monitoring in Denmark and Greenland, as well as consultancy about earthquake risks in connection with large construction works.
The main tasks of the Continental Shelf Project are to identify potential claim areas and to acquire, interpret and document the necessary data for a submission to the United Nations.
The subsurface archive's main objective is the handling of data from oil and gas related exploration activities in Denmark as well as in Greenland.
