GEUS has a long tradition for working in developing countries with projects in South America, Africa and Asia. Department of Petrology and Economic Geology provides a wide range of expertise from various aspects within the artisanal and small scale mining sector, and national promotion of mineral resources. Some past activities are listed below.
  • Artisanal and small-scale mining. Main focus has been on health and environmental problems caused by mining, in particular on the hazardous use of mercury, and on teaching alternative technology for the artisanal and small scale gold miners, for example in Tanzania, the Kyrgyz Republic, Mongolia and the Philippines ( Small-scale mining in the Philippines and Mercury decontamination in the Philippines)
  • Local use of agrominerals in Tanzania
  • Small scale aggregate mining in Accra; assessment of the impact on urban sprawl development in Ghana
  • Small-scale production of solar salt; research on land-use issues in Ghana
  • Certification of rubies and sapphires in Tanzania
  • Promotion of mineral resources aimed at foreign investors on behalf of the governments of Laos, Yemen, Ethiopia and Bolivia.
  • Mining cadastre development strategy on behalf of the government of Tanzania.
  • Capacity building in geological mapping and quality check (QC) on airborne geophysical surveys to the government of Ghana.
  • Development of hand-books for best practises in small scale mining, produced for ministries in Zambia and Nigeria.
Partners
Most projects have been wholly or partly financed by international donors, such as World Bank, United Nations Development Programme (UNDP), Danish Ministry of Foreign Affairs (DANIDA), Nordic Council of Ministers, Belgian Technical Corporation and local Danish embassies.
